Vector Graphics

Lesson 1

Bézier curves

Mathematical foundations and derivation. Quadratic and cubic curves. Combining into splines, tangent continuity.

Introduction to Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator interface and document structure: similarities and differences with Adobe Photoshop, distinctions in the Layers panel, Isolation mode. Making and editing splines: Pen tool and its controls, inserting spline points, Anchor Point tool, joining splines. Compound paths: Pathfinder panel, Shape Builder tool. Appearance panel and Expand Appearance function.

    Resources

  1. Vectorpea (free online alternative)

Lesson 2

Embedding external files

Combining vector and raster images, Links panel, linking between Illustrator and Photoshop, Clipping Masks. Importing and editing Wolfram Mathematica graphics, selecting objects by properties and types, stroke options Dashing and arrowheads. Dealing with font issues: selectively replacing missing fonts, Flatten Transparency function, fonts sources for Wolfram Mathematica. Importing rendered LaTeX documents, font sources from CTAN and .ttf substitutes. In-place LaTeX expression rendering: plugin LaTeX2AI and alternative scripts.
*Tracing raster images.

Lesson 3

Poster Layout and Text

Foundational design principles: repetition, contrast, proximity. Scalling strokes and patterns setting. Text layers, text block threading, typing along splines, convertion to outlines. Panels Character and Paragraph. Vector image formats, saving to .ai and .pdf, exporting as raster image.
*Exporting to .eps and .svg.
